Melamine CAS#108-78-1
1. Industrial Versatility: Widely used in the production of plastics, laminates, adhesives, and as a precursor in the manufacture of resins and melamine-formaldehyde polymers.
2. Stable and Non-Flammable: Exhibits excellent stability, is non-flammable, and remains unaffected by strong acids and oxidizing agents.
3. High Melting Point: With a melting point above 300°C, it is ideal for high-temperature applications in various industrial processes.
4. Limited Water Solubility: While slightly soluble in water, its limited solubility enhances its stability and usefulness in specific chemical processes.
Melamine, often referred to as "melamine," "protein essence," or "mi'an" (Chinese pinyin: mi'an), is a nitrogen-containing triazine heterocyclic organic compound primarily utilized as an industrial chemical. It appears as white monoclinic crystals with minimal odor, exhibiting limited solubility in water (3.1g/L at room temperature) but dissolving readily in formaldehyde, acetic acid, hot ethylene glycol, glycerol, and pyridine.
The substance remains insoluble in acetone and ether, and poses health risks, making it unsuitable for food processing or as a food additive. Despite this, certain unethical manufacturers have adulterated dairy products with melamine to artificially elevate nitrogen levels during protein content testing.
