Acrylic acid is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid, with a molecular structure consisting of a vinyl group and a carboxyl group. Pure acrylic acid is a colorless, clear liquid with a characteristic pungent odor. Its density is 1.0511. Its melting point is 14°C. Its boiling point is 140.9°C. It is highly acidic and corrosive. It is soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. Its chemical properties are active. It readily polymerizes to form a transparent white powder. Reduction produces propionic acid. Addition of hydrochloric acid produces 2-chloropropionic acid, which is used in the preparation of acrylic resins and other organic syntheses. It can be obtained by the oxidation of acrolein or the hydrolysis of acrylonitrile. It can also be synthesized from acetylene, carbon monoxide, and water, or by the pressurized oxidation of ethylene and carbon monoxide.
