The dodecahydrate is a white or colorless hexagonal crystal with a density of 1.62 g/cm³. It melts around 75°C when heated quickly and begins to lose its crystallized water at 100°C. Even with sustained heating, it retains the final water molecule. It is soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 28 g/100 mL at 20°C. The resulting solution is strongly alkaline, with a pH of 11.5 for a 0.1M solution. It is insoluble in alcohol.
