Methyl salicylate CAS# 119-36-8
Natural Sourcing: Methyl salicylate is naturally found in essential oils from plants like wintergreen and birch, making it widely available for various uses.
Fragrance: Known for its distinct wintergreen mint aroma, it is used in cosmetics, toiletries, and aromatherapy for its refreshing scent.
Solubility: While insoluble in water, it is highly soluble in ethanol and other organic solvents, making it versatile for multiple applications.
Stability: Methyl salicylate is stable under proper conditions but should be kept away from strong oxidizing agents and bases to avoid degradation.
Methyl salicylate, also known as methyl o-hydroxybenzoate, wintergreen oil, birch oil, sweet birch oil, and tea seed oil, is a compound found naturally in essential oils such as those from deer hoof grass, wintergreen, birch, green tea seed, clove, eugenol, tuberose, schisandra, ylang ylang, as well as in juices from cherries, apples, and strawberries. It is a colorless to light yellow or light yellow-red transparent oily liquid with a distinct wintergreen fragrance. The compound has a relative molecular weight of 152.16, a relative density of 1.1738, a melting point of -8.6°C, and a boiling point of 223.3°C. Its flash point is 96°C, and its refractive index is 1.5360. Methyl salicylate is insoluble in water but dissolves in common organic solvents like ethanol, ether, and glacial acetic acid. It is prone to color changes when exposed to air. The oral LD50 for rats is 887 mg/kg.
