DMSO is a polar aprotic solvent utilized in chemical reactions, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), and as a cryoprotectant for vitrification in the preservation of cells, tissues, and organs. It helps prevent mechanical damage to cells caused by ice crystal formation during freezing. DMSO is commonly used in the storage of primary, sub-cultured, and recombinant heteroploid and hybridoma cell lines, as well as embryonic stem cells (ESC) and hematopoietic stem cells. It is often combined with BSA or fetal bovine serum (FBS) in these applications.
