Calcium Stearate CAS#1592-23-0

                - Good Thermal Stability: Calcium stearate has a high melting point of 179-180°C, making it stable under high temperatures.
- Insolubility in Water: It is insoluble in water and common solvents, ensuring stability in humid or aqueous environments.
- Versatile Solubility: Soluble in organic solvents like hot benzene, toluene, and turpentine, allowing flexibility in various formulations.
- Decomposes to Useful Components: Reacts with strong acids to decompose into stearic acid and calcium salt, which can be used in diverse applications.
Calcium stearate, also known as calcium octadecanoic acid, is a light white crystalline powder with the chemical formula (C17H35COO)2Ca and a molecular weight of 607.00. It has a melting point of 179-180°C and decomposes when heated. It is insoluble in water, cold ethanol, and diethyl ether, but dissolves in hot benzene, toluene, and turpentine, and is slightly soluble in hot ethanol and diethyl ether. When it reacts with strong acids, it breaks down into stearic acid and the corresponding calcium salt. It is hygroscopic and resistant to lipolytic microorganisms.

Calcium stearate is utilized as a flow agent in powders, including certain food products like Smarties, and as a surface conditioner in hard candies such as Sprees. It is also employed as a waterproofing agent for fabrics and a lubricant in pencils and crayons.
In the concrete industry, calcium stearate helps control efflorescence in cement-based products used for making concrete masonry units, such as pavers and blocks, while also serving as a waterproofing agent.
