Potassium carbonate CAS#584-08-7
Highly Soluble in Water: Potassium carbonate dissolves easily in water, forming a strongly alkaline solution, making it ideal for various industrial and chemical processes.
Moisture Absorption: As a hygroscopic compound, it naturally absorbs moisture from the environment, which can be beneficial in certain applications like drying agents.
Versatile Industrial Applications: Commonly used in glass manufacturing, soap production, and as a fertilizer, potassium carbonate serves a wide range of industries.
Insoluble in Organic Solvents: It remains insoluble in organic solvents like ethanol, which allows for selective solubility in aqueous-based applications.
Potassium carbonate (K2CO3), also known as potash or pearl ash, appears as a white powder or colorless crystalline solid with a salty taste and a tendency to absorb moisture. It dissolves easily in water to form a strongly alkaline solution but is insoluble in organic solvents like ethanol.

Potassium carbonate is used in the production of optical glass to improve its transparency, strength, and refractive index. It also serves as a welding rod to prevent arc interruptions during welding. Additional uses include its application as a VAT dye and a de-whitening agent in ice dyeing processes. Furthermore, it functions as an absorbent for carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide removal and can be combined with soda ash to create a dry powder fire extinguishing agent.
