Nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE), also known as polyethylene glycol mono-4-nonylphenyl ether (C15H24O(C2H4O)n), is a nonionic surfactant commonly used in industrial and household cleaning products, pesticides, paints, textiles, and cosmetics due to its excellent detergency, wetting, and emulsifying properties. It appears as a pale yellow to brown, viscous liquid with a distinct odor, synthesized by polymerizing nonylphenol with ethylene oxide. While NPE is effective in enhancing cleaning and emulsification, its environmental impact—particularly its toxicity to aquatic life and poor biodegradability—has led to regulatory restrictions on its use.

Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPEs) are nonionic surfactants available in liquid form. The various types of NPEs are classified based on the number of ethylene oxide (EO) units in their structure. These compounds serve multiple functions, such as adjuvants, detergents, cleaners, dispersants, emulsifiers, humectants, solubilizers, and wetting agents. NPEs are widely utilized across a range of industries, including coatings, agricultural formulations, functional fluids, household and industrial cleaning, institutional maintenance, and the oil and gas sector.
